UCLA AUD Building Design with Landscape Studio 413

Project Breif:This project focuses on the disciplinary issues, techniques & organizations of the urban landscape, the metropolitan field. That is the arena of interaction between those fabrics with infrastructures and networks as well as with public amenities and spaces. As a complex hybrid of landscape and building, the city will be used as the didactic and actual context for the investigation and invention of new models of, and analogs for, the role of the landscape and public open space in architecture, and vice versa. The concern is less with the architecture of the individual iconic building, which assumes the city as a deferential background, but rather with the architecture of the prototypical—the invention of new typologies (in this case, of urban living) whose potency lies not in their rarity, but in their capacity to be repeated.
The project used the profile of the precedent as the starting point, as a way to organize the Programmatic elements that we’ve asked to deal with into the project. The project kept the profile because it’s really explicit expression of line and trying to investigate what line building can do. The project didn’t approach the project with the smallest units organization and aggregates, in fact I approached the project with line and layering the line as a way to organize the programs between these layers. Moving beyond simply offsetting the layers, creating intersections between them allows opportunities for the mass of the line to break apart. The intersection spaces generate a different kind of landscaped space but also interior space that are wrapped by different lines.

Line order where units go and the relationship of various lines also define interstitial spaces that I programmed as landscape and circulation, as well as outdoor activities. Zigzagging the block across the site allows a longer block while retaining the open space around the whole. Which creates the impression of living in a parklike environment. and we operate the facade so that the building can start to eliminate the image of the wall and act as more of a screen - visually permeable - and reducing the mass impression of the building. Different elevations acting as different thresholds for different
communities
