03. The Fragile Dancer/ 華奢な一本柱

2019.1 - 2019.3
UCLA AUD Building Design Studio 412

Project Breif:
The first phase of the project focuses on the development of synthetic design skills derived from a focus on architectural organization and structure, with related conceptual and formal implications. Hokusai Museum by Kazuyo Sejima as a precedent, the studio introduces basic structural concepts in response to live and dead loads and volumetric hierarchy, introducing methods of comparative analysis as a means by which architectural precedent may be described, evaluated, and deployed as the foundation for Los Angeles, in this case a library.

The second phase of the project embraced the difference between two different structures and to explore structural fragility through combining structural systems and introducing the dialect between mass and thickness and density in relation to the street. The project initially started with placing a bearing wall around the site in order to have the intimacy and comfort spaces protected by robust massing. The combination of bearing wall and single column articulated the structural dilemma and at the same time from the structural system it successfully introduced the dialect between heaviness and lightness of the building.

This project is about how does the single fragile column that organize the building and become a focal point and potential spaces that wall can not be created.
